Certification by Prior Experience for Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback Professionals
Certification is open to licensed professionals from psychology, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician’s assistant who hold a degree from a regionally accredited academic institution. "Regionally accredited academic institution” refers to an Accredited Institution of Postsecondary Education as determined by the American Council on Education. A signed, sealed, original transcript from the university that granted your highest degree must be submitted directly to BCIA.
A complete description of the Entry Level program is found in our brochure.
Candidates must file an application and demonstrate proof of:
- a human anatomy, human physiology, or human biology course from a regionally accredited academic institution.
- relevant didactic education/training from any/all of the following areas: 40 hours of post professional education; 2,000 hours of on-the-job training; professional teaching; research and/or publications in the field.
- clinical practice of at least 2,000 hours of direct patient care using biofeedback assisted behavior interventions to treat pelvic muscle dysfunction.
- letter of recommendation from another health care professional.
- a “no fail” written certification exam which may be taken either at one of the scheduled exam sites or through a special exam that is independently proctored.
- payment of certification fees.
The first step to certification is filing an application. A completed application must include a signed, sealed, original transcript, documentation of didactic education and training, proof of the required client hours, and payment of the certification fee. Once your application has been approved and fees received, you may schedule a time for your exam. You may order your application packet from BCIA or download the packet from the website. The documents included are: Application, Application Instructions, Blueprint, Ethical Principles, and Exam Registration Form.
All candidates must agree to abide by the BCIA Ethical Principles and follow the appropriate rules and regulations of their profession and their state.
Certification is valid for three years. To recertify, the candidate must demonstrate completion of 36 hours of continuing education and must attest that their license/credential has not been suspended, investigated or revoked.
Lists of BCIA certified providers are posted on this website through Find a Practitioner.
